REGENERATIVE NEUROSCIENCE GROUP
Who I worked with.
Overall, the goal of the Regenerative Neuroscience Group is to produce creative ideas and techniques in order to delay the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in humans as well as new therapeutic strategies to treat and eventually cure the condition.
The RNG is located in the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney. The group is led by Associate Professor Michael Valenzuela. His team is made up of students and staff with varying degrees and specialties that all bring a different creative way of thinking to the table. With human dementia and Alzheimer’s disease on the rise in Australia and around the world, the group is determined to take initiative by looking into the canine brain, experimenting with stem cells, increasing public awareness, and eventually conducting new treatment trials.
Currently, the group is conducting stem cell trials on dogs. They have successfully reversed the symptoms of cognitive canine dysfunction (the canine equivalent of Alzheimer’s disease) in three dogs! The group’s work is very promising and they will continue pursue their goal until it is accomplished. Visit their website for more elaborate descriptions of their work and projects.
